STAGES OF DENTAL DISEASE

Dental disease is more than just bad breath

BIOFILM (PLAQUE)

The formation of biofilm is the first stage of dental disease. Biofilm, also known as plaque, is a soft layer of bacteria that forms and grows on the tooth’s surface.

TARTAR

Minerals from saliva cause the biofilm to harden and form dental tartar. Tartar can make the teeth appear yellow or brown.

GINGIVITIS

When the biofilm spreads under the gum line, the gums become inflamed. Gums can appear red and swollen.

PERIODONTITIS

Infection under the gum line can spread deeper, causing permanent damage to the structures that support the teeth. Veterinary intervention is needed to stop the progression of the disease.
